Students participate in math challenge

Several Huntsville students represented their schools well in a math competition this weekend. Students from across Alabama participated in the Alabama MATHCOUNTS State Championship in Huntsville.

60 students from 14 schools came to Raytheon’s Warfighter Protection Center Saturday to compete.

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every state.

Student awarded grant to attend Thespian Festival 2011

Ellen Jones, a junior at Randolph School in Huntsville is one of four recipients of a Doug Finney Festival Grant to attend Thespian Festival 2011. The Thespian Festival will take place June 20th-25th at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The grant is awarded by the Educational Theatre Association and its student honorary, the International Thespian Society.

Angel is about 8 years old. She was abandoned at a local vet's office. Angel is a friendly cat.

T.C. is a young male cat that was found in a Burger King parking lot. He is friendly and loving.

Safe driving class

An upcoming safe driving course being held by AAA-Alabama will allow Huntsville area drivers age 55 and older to sharpen their driving safety skills and save money on auto insurance. This is a great opportunity for mature drivers to refresh their driving knowledge and learn some terrific defensive driving techniques.

Alabama law requires auto insurance providers to award a discount to anyone who takes this class, age 55 and older. Typical insurance discounts range between five and ten percent per year and the certification is valid for three years.

Road work will begin on South Memorial Parkway Sunday night starting at 6pm.

Crews will be milling and repaving the roadway from Martin Road to the new Weatherly overpass until 6am.  One lane will be kept open in the work zone, however, drivers should expect delays. 

The work should last about 2 weeks, weather permitting.

Resident being questioned about apartment fire

Huntsville Firefighters are on the scene of an apartment fire on Woodway Drive.  One person that lives there is being questioned by police.

The fire broke out at 6:30 a.m. at Woodway Pines Apartments. Firefighters on the scene worked to put out hot spots for more than an hour.
