Heredity loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger

The phrase "heredity loads the gun but lifestyle pulls the trigger," refers to the lethal combination of inactive lifestyle plus a diet rich in high fat foods equals obesity on a massive scale.  It is also the topic of a University of Alabama in Huntsville Honors Forum lecture next month.

"Heredity Loads the Gun but Lifestyle Pulls the Trigger," will be presented by Draunta "Dee" Nicovich, on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. in Frank Franz Hall, room 138. The talk sponsored by the UAHuntsville Honors Program is free and open to the public.

Have a Heart Day is a fun opportunity to learn more about your heart and how to keep it healthy. Visitors will enjoy a day of heart-related activities at Sci-Quest ranging from Valentine's Day crafts to viewing a live sheep heart dissection. Children can view their own heartbeat using simple materials and make their own stethoscopes.

Elkmont native works to bring smiles to hospitalized children

An Elkmont resident is spearheading a drive to collect books and cards for children and teenagers hospitalized throughout North Alabama.

Through her tax-exempt, non-profit group, Pages for Children Inc., Olivia Hardy is collecting cards and used books and seeking private donations and business sponsorships to bring the items to hospitalized children from the following North Alabama counties: Limestone, Morgan, Madison, Franklin, Lauderdale, Jackson, Franklin, Colbert, Jackson, Marshall and Dekalb.

“All across America there are thousands of children and teens who have to spend some time in a hospital for one reason or another,” said Hardy. “Imagine lying in a hospital bed with nothing to do. Imagine if one of these children belonged to you.

Huntsville walk MS

Huntsville Walk MS will take place at the Huntsville Botanical Garden on Saturday, April 2, 2011, and will offer a one mile and three mile option for all participants.

Check-in opens at 8:30 a.m. in the Amphitheatre and the walk begins with a shot gun start at 9:30am. The celebration continues in the Amphitheatre after the walk with refreshments, announcements, awards, and entertainment. You can even stick around after the event to enjoy the Botanical Garden with your family and friends!

Remembering former WAFF reporter Susie Edwards

Former WAFF 48 News reporter Susie Edwards lost her battle to liver cancer and has passed away.

The 34-year-old was at her home in Rainbow city with her mother and a hospice nurse when she died at 2:00 a.m.

The Gadsden native worked several years in the Huntsville TV market.  She left the Rocket City in 2007 to move to Louisiana to work at WWL in New Orleans. 

Shortly before Thanksgiving in 2009, she experienced intense pain in her left shoulder and chest that felt like a heart attack.

$55 million bonus for Medicaid program

$55 million bonus for Medicaid program

Alabama is getting $55 million from the Federal government for its Medicaid program.

The state will receive the money as a performance bonus for its work enrolling young people in its "all kids health insurance program."

Babysitter's Bootcamp

The American Red Cross is now enrolling participants (11 to 15 year olds) for Babysitter's Bootcamp scheduled at the American Red Cross for Tuesday, December 28th from 9:00 am-4:00 pm and Wednesday, December 29th from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.

This course provides the skills and confidence to be great babysitters, plus real-world experiences to help participants develop leadership and communication abilities.
