Calls have already started to come in from people wanting to make sure their heater can handle the cold.

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The 70 and 80 degree weather is headed out and the 60s and below are on the way in. With the cold weather on the way, some people could be turning on their heat for the first time, but there are some things you may want to check on first.

"You just want to watch out and make sure your thermostat is getting to the temperature you set it to," said Russell Hernandez.

Hernandez is a service technician with Joe East Heating and Air.

He said the calls have already started to come in from people wanting to make sure their heater can handle the cold.

"This is actually the perfect time, headed into the cooling season or the heating season, you want your unit serviced, checked out and make sure it's running good," Hernandez said.  "That way at this point, while it's still low demand on heating, you don't want to get into a full blown heating and you have a major problem."

The most common problems service techs like Hernandez see are neglected systems.

"Sometimes it's been eight, 10 or 12 years before they have been serviced, and now it's just too much for the system to handle," he said.  "It's too dirty and it's too old."

As the cold weather heads our way, Hernandez offers this advice to help you get warm and stay there.

"Get your unit checked out, pick a temperature, and stick with it," he said.
