HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The Madison County Veteran's Memorial has been a work in progress for years.
The major work was completed on Saturday, though.
A huge crowd helped celebrate the completion of the memorial's final phase. The courage statue was unveiled and dedicated.
The statue stands for courage, sacrifice and duty. The eternal flame was lit, a reminder of those who lost their lives defending the nation.
"The cost of freedom is high, and the ultimate price has been paid by 365 veterans from Huntsville and Madison County throughout the many wars our nation has called upon them to fight," said General Dennis Via.
The veteran's time capsule was also dedicated. The capsule was put into the ground and will be opened on Veteran's Day, 2062.
