Skylab will celebrate its 40th anniversary.

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- The first astronauts to work and live in space 40 years ago will visit Huntsville on Thursday for Skylab's 40th anniversary.

Skylab launched its first mission in 1973 and was the first space station for the U.S.

Engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center completed much of the work involved in Skylab.

The space station orbited Earth for six years and traveled more than 890 million miles, according to officials at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

All eight surviving astronauts who worked in Skylab will unveil the mission's training module at the Space and Rocket Center 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

That module has been refurbished and will now reside at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration.
