Puerto Rico teams take top spots in moonbuggy race

NASA declared the winners of the 20th NASA Great Moonbuggy Race at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. Team 1 from Teodoro Aguilar Mora Vocational High School of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, won first place in the high school division; racers from the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao claimed the college-division trophy.

The winning teams out-raced more than 89 teams from 23 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, India, Germany, Mexico and Russia. Approximately 600 student drivers, engineers and mechanics -- plus their team advisors and cheering sections -- gathered April 26-27 for the 20th "space race."

Huntsville City Schools will be accepting substitute teacher applications for the upcoming 2013-2014 academic year beginning April 15, 2013 through May 15, 2013.  Under a new hiring process, HCS Substitutes will be competitively selected via online application through the Alabama State Department of Education employment website.

This is the only anticipated open season that substitute teacher applications will be accepted. Should more substitute teachers be required, HCS may publish other hiring windows as needed in the future.

Selected applicants will be expected to sign a commitment to substitute at least three days per semester.  Those who do not meet this requirement will be removed from the active roster of available substitutes and will be required to re-compete the following year.

Arts Council welcomes 2nd, 3rd, & 4th graders to Panoply School Days

Arts Council welcomes 2nd, 3rd, & 4th graders to Panoply School Days

The Arts Council has announced a change to the Panoply Arts Festival’s long-running arts education program, Fifth Grade Days.  The 2013 festival will welcome younger students to preview Panoply before it opens to the public on Friday, April 26.

"Each year the Panoply Arts Festival continues to change and grow. In summer 2012, Arts Council staff, festival volunteers, and area educators considered elementary curriculum standards and determined Panoply’s educational programming best complements the curricular and developmental goals for younger students,” said Arts Council Executive Director Allison Dillon-Jauken.

“We’re excited to welcome second, third, and fourth grade classes to the festival for the first time as part of our new Panoply School Days programming on Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26. We’re confident that Panoply will be an educational, engaging arts experience for these students, teachers, and their parents,” Dillon-Jauken added.
