Huntsville schools seek donations in order to attend glabal competition

After winning top honors for creativity and problem solving in state and regional tournaments, the” Challenger Eagles” team from Challenger Elementary School and the “DInamite DIvas” from Challenger Middle Schools earned the right to travel to Destination Imagination’s (DI) Global Finals – the largest creative thinking and problem solving competition in the world – to be held May 23 through 26 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

The “Eagles” and “DInamite DIvas” will compete with other teams in the “Assembly Required” technical challenge and the “News to Me” improvisational theater challenge, respectively.  These challenges are one of seven complex, open-ended challenges that require the students to apply, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), in addition to improvisation, theater arts, writing, project management, communication, innovation, and teamwork.

Calhoun Community College will conduct its 2012 graduation ceremonies on Friday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m.  

The event will take place on the lawn in front of the Math/Science building on the Decatur campus.  In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to the Kelley Gymnasium, with televised overflow inside the Math/Science building.

According to the Calhoun Admissions Office, approximate 380 students plan to participate in this year's ceremony.  A unique feature added to the ceremony four years ago will continue this year – the graduation procession will be led by bagpiper Ryan Morrison.

Speaker for this year's graduation service is Jim Bolte, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMMAL) in Huntsville, where he is responsible for all manufacturing and support functions.  

This year’s graduation events kick off with the College’s 2012 GED Graduation taking  place on Tuesday, May 8 at 6 p.m. Kelley Gymnasium.

Peter Ammon to deliver commencement address for UAH graduation

Peter Ammon, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United States, is scheduled to deliver the University of Alabama Huntsville commencement address on Saturday, May 5.

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and will be held at the Von Braun Civic Center in downtown Huntsville.

UAH is expected to issue 872 diplomas at its spring graduation ceremony — 667 bachelor’s degrees, 181 master’s degrees and 24 Ph.D.s.

Ambassador Ammon holds a doctorate in economics from Berlin's Free University, and served most recently as the State Secretary in the German Foreign Office.  In 2007 and 2008, he was appointed German Ambassador to Paris, France.  Prior to this appointment, he served as a career diplomat in London, Senegal, New Delhi and Washington.

Miranda Bouldin, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of LogiCore Incorporated, a Huntsville-based company that provides Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) services to United States Department of Defense agencies will be the featured speaker at the 100 Black of America-Greater Huntsville’s Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Sunday, April 29.

The program will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Student Center on the Huntsville campus of Calhoun Community College.

Bouldin is affiliated with the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce (Board Member), the Greater Huntsville Rotary Club, the National Defense Industrial Association (Board Member), the International Society of Logistics Engineers, Women in Defense Organization, the Army Aviation Association of America, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and other industry, professional and charitable organizations.

4th annual Buffalo Wild Wings Festival hosted by ATO

4th annual Buffalo Wild Wings Festival hosted by ATO

On Saturday, April 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Alpha Tau Omega fraternity will host the 4th annual Battle of the Buffalo Wing Festival at Joe Davis Stadium.

The event pits the greatest wings in Huntsville against each other to see which will reign supreme. It is guaranteed to be bigger than last year, with over 14,000 wings on hand!  Confirmed restaurants participating are Hooters, Beauregards, Tim's Cajun Kitchen, Crickets, Sud's Bar and Grill, New Orleans Lunch Box, New Market BBQ, Knuckleheads and BrickHouse Restaurants, all coming out to stake their claim to the title of best wings in Huntsville. 

Battle of the Buffalo Round 4 will feature entertainment by Sony ATV artist Jami Grooms.  Jami is a country music artist who performs locally and in Nashville. Jami has signed an exclusive writing deal with Sony ATV this year after writing several years for legendary Muscle Shoals record producer Rick Hall.

Students to gather at UAH to show off space designs

More than 300 students will be on the campus of The University of Alabama in Huntsville this week to show off their best designs of spacecraft on a science mission to Mercury.

The Integrated Product Team (IPT) open house is scheduled on Wednesday from 1 p.m to 5 p.m. in Spragins Hall.

The (IPT) course is a unique engineering senior design experience that engages UAHuntsville seniors in mechanical and aerospace engineering and industrial engineering as well as undergraduates in the design of a spacecraft to accomplish a science mission to Mercury. The College of Charleston and ESTACA (Ecole Supérieure des Techniques Aéronautiques et de Construction Automobile in Paris, France) are also participants.
