Final budget hearing for Huntsville City School Board

Final budget hearing for Huntsville City School Board

Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski met with several community leaders.

WAFF caught up with him after and asked him about the upcoming challenges he faces with the school system's budget.

"We're going from a position of being about $16 million in debt, to now we will be about $14 million in the green in 2 years, so a flight path back to having a nice reserve position and also how we build some resilience in our budget in case there are more state cuts," said Dr. Wardynski.

The school system's budget goes into effect October 1st.

The Huntsville City School Board will hold their second budget hearing Thursday night to talk about the budget.

It is open to the public.

This will be the final public hearing before the budget goes to a vote on September 15th.

Fundraiser for kids causing debate for parents

Fundraiser for kids causing debate for parents

Budget cuts often have schools calling on teachers and parents to help out.

One way to help is through fundraisers, where kids sell anything from chocolate to gift wrapping paper.

Some Huntsville parents, though, have a big problem with that.

Mountain Gap Elementary school parent Rhonda Brewster said it's just too much, especially because the goal for each child is to sell more than one hundred dollars worth of items or else they can't participate in a mega party that will be held at school afterwards.

"I can understand that at the beginning of the year you get desperate looking at all these needs that the teachers have, and you want to fill them.
