Heat Wave Sweeping West!

Heat Wave Sweeping West!

A lot going on this week across the Valley.  First....a break in the intense heat is well on its way.  The area of high pressure that has caused so much anguish in our area is finally hitting the road and making waves for greener pastures in the Rockies.  This will allow a trough in the upper-levels to dig south and drop a cold front in the Valley.

This front is closing in on us right now and will bring out ahead of it, more in the way of scattered afternoon showers and storms on Monday.  With most of the heat being pushed westward, it certainly won't be so hot tomorrow, either.

Then Tuesday...the cold front.  It's going to probably kick off numerous showers and storms throughout the Valley.  Some storms may be strong to severe.  But at the same time, cooler air will be moving in with this front.  When I say cool....I mean upper 80s low 90s....which is not 107!  So, yes, that would be cooler air for sure!

Storm Chances and Cooler Temps

Keep that umbrella handy all weekend.  Spotty showers and storms will continue to remain in our forecast for not only the weekend but through next week as well.

An upper-level ridege will push west and allow disturbances to rotate through our atmosphere for the next couple of days.  And with this high pressure out of here, a trough of low pressure moves in and allows a cold front to dip south.

This front will increase rain chances around the Valley for both Monday and Tuesday.  Not only that, this front stalls here in our area and keeps the chances for showers and storms throughout Northern Alabama and Southern Tennessee into late next week.

Killer heat killing crops

The temperatures are expected to hit in the 100's this weekend, the hottest it has been this time of year since the 1930's and 1950's, says WAFF Chief Meteorologist Brad Travis.

News that area farmers do not want to hear.

Rex Vaughn owner of Vaughn Farms says; " You've got an extreme situation. Probably north Alabama looking to move into an exteme drought with no relief in sight." Vaughn says the cotton and soy bean crop still have an oppurtunity to produce, but it can only go so long with this heat and lack of rain. He adds, "corn is almost at the end of its rope."

The cost to farmers in the valley could be in the millions of dollars.

"It's going to take a significant amount of rainfall to turn the crop around, and some of it won't be turned around," adds Vaughn.

Meanwhile, Travis says, "any chance of significant rainfall isn't in the forecast until late next week."

Heat Wave Hitting the Valley

Heat Wave Hitting the Valley

An upper-leel ridge that spreads from the Southwest into the Plains is surging east and releasing a ton of heat on the Valley from now through the weekend.

This area of high pressure will also act to keep us in this drought.  As it stands we are nearly six inches below normal on the rain guage.

Triple-digit heat can have a serious effect on people during their regular routine.  Here's some ways that you can beat the heat.

Just remember to play it safe during this heat wave.  And with this heat wave comes very dry conditions.  Avoid any outside burning or use of fireworks.  With vegetation being so dry from the lack of moisture, fires can quickly start and spread.

Debby Still Up in the Air

Debby Still Up in the Air

All eyes are on Debby this evening.  Latest guidance data having a rough time determining an exact course for the Tropical Storm.  There seems to be some agreement that Debby may head up the East Coast as an upper-level trough pulls her that direction.  But some models still trying to bring her into La. or Ms.  Only time and upper-level dynamic support will tell the tale.

Back here at home....no effects from Debby.  Just a fair day with hot weather.  More hot weather on the way tomorrow, even  with a weak cold front moving in.  This front may bring some relief in the form of rain or isolated afternoon t'storms.

The front should supress the heat somewhat for Tuesday and Wednesday, but the heat and humidity returns for late week.
